Alpha Level 4 (3-Day Course)

This course is designed to familiarize the doctors providing moderate sedation with all of the narcotics available. This is a 3-day course for the seasoned practitioner that wants to learn and “experiment” with other narcotics in a controlled teaching environment. We will use:

Fentanyl

Fentanyl, also spelled fentanil, is an opioid used as a pain medication and together with other medications for anesthesia.

Remifentanil

Remifentanil is a potent, short-acting synthetic opioid analgesic drug. It is given to patients during surgery to relieve pain and as an adjunct to an anaesthetic.

Sufentanil

Sufentanil, sold under the brand names Dsuvia and Sufenta, is a synthetic opioid analgesic drug approximately 5 to 10 times as potent as its parent drug, fentanyl, and 500 times as potent as morphine.

Alfentanil

Short-acting opioid anesthetic and analgesic derivative of fentanyl. It produces an early peak analgesic effect and fast recovery of consciousness. Alfentanil is effective as an anesthetic during surgery, for supplementation of analgesia during surgical procedures, and as an analgesic for critically ill patients.

Meperidine (Demerol®)

Demerol (meperidine) is an opioid pain medication. Demerol is a strong prescription pain medicine that is used to manage the relief of short-term pain.

Hydromorphone (Dilaudid®)

Used to help relieve moderate to severe pain. Hydromorphone belongs to a class of drugs known as opioid (narcotic) analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

Morphine

Morphine is a narcotic pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain. Includes morphine side effects, interactions and indications.

True Genius

Albert Einstein once said, “the sign of a true genius is the ability to make the complex simple.” That is what Bill did for me. He takes the complex and allows you to use that information first thing on Monday morning. Right from the start, he makes it apparent that you don’t know what you don’t know, but he gives you and your staff the confidence to rise above the rest.

Contagious Excitement

I was drawn to Bill’s course because I could tell he is a dedicated teacher and lifelong learner. He gets the latest gadgets and is always up to date on pharmaceuticals both new and old. Even though he has been in practice for over 30 years he stays on the cutting edge of his specialty. That level of excitement is contagious.

Take Home Lesson

I was sedating a high fear patient. I was able to get to that sweet spot where he was comfortable, eyes closed, good respiration, heart rate, and BP. There was no way I could have done the case smoothly with my old technique. Thank you for giving me invaluable tools, tips and tricks. Without the knowledge you have given me I would not be able to practice at such a high standard. I appreciate everything you have done and continue to do for me. You are a great mentor to me.

Hands-On

If you are looking for a comprehensive approach to dental anesthesia, this is the course to take! Dr. Bill Gottschalk’s combination of didactic and hands-on approach truly allows the sedation dentist to further advance their skills through real-time experience. The training I received has definitely changed the nature in which I practice IV sedation. I highly recommend this course.
